40 ಕೋಟಿಯ ಕಿರೀಟ,10 ಕೋಟಿಯ ಬಂಗಾರದ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲು ಹಾಗು 50 ಲಕ್ಷದ ಬೆಳ್ಳಿ ಬಾಗಿಲುಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ಆ 1 ಸಾವಿರ ರೂ.ನನಗೆ ಮಹತ್ವದ್ದು ಎನ್ನಿಸಿತು!
ತಿರುಪತಿ ತಿಮ್ಮಪ್ಪಗೆ ಉದ್ಯಮಿ ಹಾಗು ರಾಜಕಾರಣಿಯೊಬ್ಬರು 40 ಕೋಟಿ ರೂ. ಮೌಲ್ಯದ ವಜ್ರ ಖಚಿತ ಬಂಗಾರದ ಕಿರೀಟವನ್ನು ಅರ್ಪಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಮತ್ತೋರ್ವ ಉದ್ಯಮಿ ಹಾಗು ರಾಜಕಾರಣಿಯೊಬ್ಬರು ಶಬರಿಮಲೈ ಅಯ್ಯಪ್ಪಸ್ವಾಮಿ ದೇಗುಲಕ್ಕೆ 10 ಕೋಟಿ ಮೌಲ್ಯದ ಚಿನ್ನದ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲುಗಳನ್ನುಮಾಡಿಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟರು. ನಮ್ಮೂರ ಉದ್ಯಮಿ ಹಾಗು ಹಾಗು ರಾಜಕಾರಣಿಯೊಬ್ಬರು ಊರ ದೇವತೆಯ ದೇಗುಲದ ಬಾಗಿಲುಗಳಿಗೆ 50 ಲಕ್ಷ ರೂ. ಮೌಲ್ಯದ ಬೆಳ್ಳಿಯ ಹೊದಿಕೆ ಸಮರ್ಪಿಸಿದರು.
ಮೇಲಿನ ಮೂರೂ ಘಟನೆಗಳನ್ನು ನಾನು ವರದಿ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದೆ. ಹೀಗೆ ಈ ಸುದ್ದಿಗಳನ್ನು ಬರೆಯುವಾಗ ದೇಣಿಗೆ ನೀಡಿದವರ ಕುರಿತು “ಎಂಥ ದಾನಿಗಳಪ್ಪ” ಎಂಬ ಅಭಿಮಾನದ ಭಾವನೆ ಮೂಡಿತಾದರೂ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಕಡೆ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿತ್ತು “ಇವರುಗಳಿಗೆ ಇದು ಯಾವ ಲೆಕ್ಕ” ಎಂದು. ಆದರೂ ಉಳ್ಳವರು ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಇಷ್ಟೊಂದು ದೇಣಿಗೆ ನೀಡುವರೇ ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಮೂಡಿ ಮೇಲಿನವರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೆಮ್ಮೆ ಎನ್ನಿಸುತ್ತಿತ್ತು.
ಇದೊಂದು ಘಟನೆ ನನಗೆ ಮೇಲಿನ ಮೂರೂ ಘಟನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಮರೆಯುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಿತ್ತು. ಮೇಲ್ಕಾಣಿಸಿದ ದಾನಿಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ಈ 1 ಸಾವಿರ ರೂ. ಬಹುಮಾನ ನೀಡಿದ್ದ ಹೈಸ್ಕೂಲ್‍ನ ಮೇಡಂ ತುಂಬಾ ದೊಡ್ಡವರು ಎನ್ನಿಸಿದರು. ಅವರ ಸ್ವಾಭಿಮಾನ, ಮಾತಿಗೆ ತಪ್ಪದ ನಡತೆ ಹಾಗೂ ತಮ್ಮ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಅವರು ಇಟ್ಟಿದ್ದ ನಂಬಿಕೆ, ಈ ಮೇಡಂ ಅವರ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವವನ್ನು ಮೇಲೆ ಕಾಣಿಸಿದ ಮಹನೀಯರುಗಿಂತಲೂ ಎತ್ತರಕ್ಕೆ ಒಯ್ದಿತ್ತು.
ಅದು ದಾವಣಗೆರೆಯ ಸೇಂಟ್ ಜಾನ್ಸ್ ಹೈಸ್ಕೂಲ್. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಗಣಿತ ವಿಷಯ ಭೋಧಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಮೇಡಂ ಅವರು ಬಡ ಕುಟುಂಬಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿದ ಪ್ರತಿಭಾನ್ವಿತ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕಿ. ಶಾಲೆಯ ವೇತನದಿಂದಲೇ ಜೀವನ ನಿರ್ವಹಿಸುವ ಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಅವರದ್ದು. ತಮ್ಮ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹಿಸುವ ಸಲುವಾಗಿ ಮತ್ತು ತಾನು ಹೇಗೆ ಗಣಿತವನ್ನು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಥ ಮಾಡಿಸಿದ್ದೇನೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಓರೆಗೆ ಹಚ್ಚುವ ಸಲುವಾಗಿ ಉತ್ಸಾಹದಿಂದ ತಮ್ಮ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಒಂದು ವಾಗ್ದಾನ ಮಾಡಿದರು.
“ಎಸ್ಸೆಸ್ಸೆಲ್ಸಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಗಣಿತ ವಿಷಯದಲ್ಲಿ 100ಕ್ಕೆ 100 ಅಂಕ ಗಳಿಸಿದವರಿಗೆ 1 ಸಾವಿರ ರೂ. ಬಹುಮಾನ ನೀಡುತ್ತೇನೆ” ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದ್ದರು.
ಫಲಿತಾಂಶ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಯಿತು. ನನ್ನ ಮಗನೂ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಜನರು ಗಣಿತದಲ್ಲಿ 100 ಕ್ಕೆ 100 ಅಂಕ ಗಳಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ತನ್ನ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳ ಈ ಸಾಧನೆ ಕಂಡು ಮೇಡಂ ಅವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಸ್ವಂತ ಮಕ್ಕಳೇ ಈ ಸಾಧನೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೇನೊ ಎಂಬಂತೆ ಹಿಗ್ಗಿ ಹೋಗಿದ್ದರು. ಈ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಸಾಧನೆಯನ್ನು ಸಹೋದ್ಯೋಗಿಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ಬಂಧು-ಮಿತ್ರರಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೆಮ್ಮೆಯಿಂದ ಬೀಗಿದ್ದರು.
ಅಂದು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ಮಾಸ್ಕರ್ಡ್ ಪಡೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಶಾಲೆಗೆ ಹೋದಾಗ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಸಿಹಿ ತಿನ್ನಿಸಿ 100 ಕ್ಕೆ 100 ಅಂಕ ಪಡೆದಿದ್ದ ನಾಲ್ವರಿಗೂ ತಲಾ 1000 ರೂ ಇದ್ದ ಕವರ್ ನೀಡಿ ವಿಶ್ ಮಾಡಿ ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದರು. ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದು ತಮ್ಮ ಮೇಡಂ ನೀಡಿದ್ದ ಕವರನ್ನು ಹೆಮ್ಮೆಯಿಂದ ತೆರೆದು ಅದರಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ 1000 ರೂಗಳನ್ನು ನನಗೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಪತ್ನಿಗೆ ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಈ ಸಾವಿರ ರೂ. ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ತನಗೇ ಸೇರಿದ್ದೆಂದು, ತಮ್ಮ ಗಣಿತದ ಟೀಚರ್ ನೀಡಿರುವ ಬಹುಮಾನ ಇದು ಎಂದೂ ತಿಳಿಸಿದನು. 1000 ರೂ. ಹಣವನ್ನು ನಮ್ಮೆದುರೇ ಎಣಿಸಿದನು. ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ 100ರ 4 ನೋಟುಗಳು, 50ರ 4 ನೋಟುಗಳಿದ್ದವು. ಉಳಿದವು 20, 10 ಹಾಗು 5 ರೂ.ಗಳ ನೋಟುಗಳಾಗಿದ್ದವು.
ನನ್ನ ಮಗ ಹೆಮ್ಮೆಯಿಂದ ಹಣ ಎಣಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೆ ನನ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ಆತಂಕ ಮನೆ ಮಾಡಿತ್ತು. ಅರಿವಿಲ್ಲದಂತೆಯೇ ಕಣ್ಣಾಳೆಗಳು ಒದ್ದೆಯಾದವು. ಮಗನಿಂದ ಹಾಗೆ ಆ ಹಣವನ್ನು ಪಡೆದುಕೊಂಡೆ. ಆ ನೋಟುಗಳಿಂದ ಜೀರಿಗೆಯ ವಾಸನೆ ಬರುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಆಗಂತೂ ನನಗೆ ದುಃಖ ತಡೆಯಲಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಖಂಡಿತವಾಗಿಯೂ ಈ ಹಣವನ್ನು ಮೇಡಂ ಅವರು ಕಷ್ಟಪಟ್ಟು ಸಂಗ್ರಹಿಸಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದರು ಎಂಬುದು ನಿಶ್ಚಿತವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಶಾಲಾ ಆಡಳಿತ ಮಂಡಳಿ ಆರ್ಥಿಕ ಮುಗ್ಗಟ್ಟಿನಿಂದ ನಾಲ್ಕೈದು ತಿಂಗಳಿನಿಂದ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿಗೆ ವೇತನವನ್ನೇ ನೀಡಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆಡಳಿತಮಂಡಳಿಯ ಅನೇಕರು ನನಗೆ ಆತ್ಮೀಯರು ಆಗಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಆಗುಹೋಗುಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನನಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿತ್ತು.
ಮಗನಿಂದ ಆ 1000 ರೂ.ಗಳನ್ನು ಪಡೆದು ನನ್ನ ಬಳಿಯಿದ್ದ 500ರ ಎರಡು ನೋಟುಗಳನ್ನು ಅವನಿಗೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟೆ. ಅವನಿಗೆ ಏನೂ ತಿಳಿಸದೆ ನೇರವಾಗಿ ಹಣ್ಣಿನ ಅಂಗಡಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಒಂದಷ್ಟು ಹಣ್ಣು ಖರೀದಿಸಿ ಆ ಮೇಡಂ ಅವರ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದೆ. ಮೊದಲಿಗೆ ಹಣ್ಣುಗಳನ್ನು ನೀಡಿ ನನ್ನ ಮಗ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ನಾಲ್ವರು 100 ಕ್ಕೆ 100 ಅಂಕ ಗಳಿಸಲು ಕಾರಣರಾಗಿದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ಅಭಿನಂದಿಸಿದೆ. ಅವರ ಕಣ್ಣುಗಳು ಮಿಂಚಿದವು. “ಸರ್, ಇನ್ನೂ ಮೂವರು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ತಲಾ 99 ಹಾಗು ಐವರು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ತಲಾ 98 ಅಂಕಗಳಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ, ಛೇ… ಇನ್ನು ಒಂದೆರಡು ಅಂಕ ಗಳಿಸಿದ್ದರೆ” ಎಂದರು.
ಅವರ ಧ್ವನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆಯೂ ಹೆಮ್ಮೆ ಇದ್ದುದು ತಿಳಿಯುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ನಾನು ಅವರನ್ನು ಮತ್ತೆ ಅಭಿನಂದಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಅವರು ನೀಡಿದ್ದ 1000 ರೂಗಳ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ನನ್ನದೂ 1000 ರೂ. ಸೇರಿಸಿ 2000 ರೂಗಳಿದ್ದ ಕವರನ್ನು ಅವರಿಗೆ ನೀಡಲು ಮುಂದಾದೆ. ನೀವು ಉತ್ತಮವಾಗಿ ಪಾಠ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ನನ್ನ ಮಗ 100 ಕ್ಕೆ 100 ಅಂಕ ಗಳಿಸಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ಇದು ನಿಮ್ಮ ಶಿಷ್ಯ ನಿಮಗೆ ನೀಡುತ್ತಿರುವ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಗುರು ಕಾಣಿಕೆ ಎಂದು ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿ ಎಂಬುದಾಗಿ ಪರಿಪರಿಯಾಗಿ ಬೇಡಿದರೂ ಅವರು ಒಪ್ಪಲಿಲ್ಲ. ನೀವು ತಂದಿರುವ ಹಣ್ಣುಗಳನ್ನು ಸಂತೋಷದಿಂದ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ನನ್ನ ಆತ್ಮ ತೃಪ್ತಿಗೆ ನನ್ನ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗೆ ನಾನು ಬಹುಮಾನವಾಗಿ ನೀಡಿರುವ ಹಣವನ್ನು ನೀವು ಹಿಂದಿರುಗಿಸುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಮಾಡಬೇಡಿ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಲೇ ಆತ್ಮೀಯವಾಗಿ ಬೀಳ್ಕೊಟ್ಟರು.
ಹೀಗೆ ಹೇಳುವಾಗ “ಆಡಳಿತ ಮಂಡಳಿ ನಮಗೆ ವೇತನ ನೀಡಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬ ಆತಂಕ ನಿಮಗಿರುವುದು ನನಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತು. ಸರ್ ನಮಗೆ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸರಳವಾದ ಜೀವನದ ಅನುಭವ ಇದೆ. ಕಷ್ಟಪಟ್ಟು, ಇಷ್ಟಪಟ್ಟು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗಾಗಿ, ಶಾಲೆಗಾಗಿ ದುಡಿಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಭಗವಂತ ನಮ್ಮ ಕೈ ಬಿಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ” ಎಂದರು.
ಇಂದೂ ಆ 1000 ರೂ. ಹಣ ನಮ್ಮ ಬಳಿ ಇದೆ. ಅದನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದಾಗೊಮ್ಮೆ ನನಗನ್ನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ, ಚಿನ್ನದ ಕಿರೀಟ, ಬಂಗಾರದ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲು ಹಾಗೂ ಬೆಳ್ಳಿಯ ಬಾಗಿಲುಗಳನ್ನು ದೇಣಿಗೆ ನೀಡಿದ ಆ ಮಹನೀಯರುಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ನಮ್ಮ ಮೇಡಂ ಒಂದು ತೂಕ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಎಂದು, ನೀವೇನಂತೀರಾ?
40 ಕೋಟಿಯ ಚಿನ್ನದ ಕಿರೀಟ ನೀಡಿದ ಜನಾರ್ಧನರೆಡ್ಡಿ ಜೈಲಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಬಂದರು. 10 ಕೋಟಿಯ ಬಂಗಾರದ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲು ಮಾಡಿಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದ ವಿಜಯ್ ಮಲ್ಯ ದೇಶವನ್ನೇ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಓಡಿ ಹೋದರು. ಆದರೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕಿ ನಿರ್ಮಲಾ ಮೇಡಂ ಇನ್ನೂ ಅದೇ ಶಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲೇ ನೂರಾರು, ಸಾವಿರಾರು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳ ಹೆಮ್ಮೆಯ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕಿಯಾಗಿ ಗೌರವಿಸಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ, ಪೂಜಿಸಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
First I need to Congratulate the Guru(teacher). The Youth(including me) are following useless Politicians . This has to be changed . we should follow these type of people and get inspired…. thanks for the information ..

Kudos to you for having written beautifully about Nirmala madam’s simplicity and her greatness. About 15 years ago, in 2003, she taught us mathematics. I was in seventh standard then. She was strict disciplinarian and a hard task master, maybe that’s the hallmark of every math teacher:-) More than that she was a good teacher. Dedicated, meticulous and hard-working, a role model for anybody to emulate. Back then even seventh standard students had to sit for public exams. I still remember how she made us solve as many problems and as many times as it took to master them, test after test, class after class. We would tire but not her, she was like a lady on a mission. Even a score of 99 would not satisfy her, she expected a 100 from all of us. Many thousands have learnt mathematics under her tutelage now, the zeal to teach is still the same. Hats off to her and the entire team of teachers that St John’s convent has successfully retained as its staff. Commendable teachers, hearty and down to earth with passion for teaching. I remember many others after these many years with reverence, be it Savitri madam, Veena madam, Sofia madam, shanti madam, sharada madam, Hasina madam, every one of them, equally dedicated.
Thanks for writing this, it took me back to my school days.

So happy to read this article on Nirmala madam. She taught us Mathematics in a way that helped me throughout my engineering. My basics got stronger only with her teaching . She used to answer all my doubts with patience even outside the class hours. Great days to remember at St.Johns 🙂

Teaching is the profession that teaches all the other profession.
Now a days education has become business. I studied at DRM Science College. Few lecturers were running tuition classes at their residence that too during college hours. They converted education as pakkaa commercial Business.
